The rationale treating Lyme’s Disease with HBOT is that Borrelia burgdorferi cannot survive in oxygen saturated environments, and HBOT may provide strong enough oxygen exposure to damage the bacteria (4)
. Many case-studies have been conducted with positive results, although the number of larger studies is on the smaller side. In 18 patients treated with 10 days to 4 weeks of HBOT, the symptoms of Lyme seemed to improve significantly until symptoms nearly disappeared (4)
One study of 75 individuals found that nearly 90% experienced significant improvement or even cessation of their symptoms that lasted up to 6 years post-HBOT treatment. Such improvements included reduced fatigue, reduced joint pain, and improved cognitive function and memory. These patients remained on their antibiotics throughout the treatment(4).
