Hyperbaric oxygen inhibits benign and malignant human mammary epithelial cell proliferation.
Abstract: Hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) therapy is the administration of 100%-inhaled oxygen to patients at increased atmospheric pressure. We used an in vitro model to examine the effects of HBO on mammary cell proliferation. Normal mammary epithelia, primary tumor...
Headache and altitude decompression sickness: joint pain or neurological pain?
Abstract: Exposure to reduced ambient pressure may result in decompression sickness (DCS). Headache is among the DCS symptoms encountered and is usually regarded as neurological DCS, which is traditionally classified as serious DCS. Since cranial sutures may be...
A combination of radiotherapy, nitric oxide and a hyperoxygenation sensitizing protocol for brain malignant tumor treatment.
Abstract: Brain malignant tumor such as glioblastoma is a challenging medical and surgical problem. In spite of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, the prognosis is still very poor. The limitations of currently available treatment modalities to cure or...
Hyperbaric oxygen: a potential new therapy for leukemia?
Abstract: Tonomura, Granowitz, , , , , , , (2007). Hyperbaric oxygen: a potential new therapy for leukemia? Leukemia research, 2007 Jun;31(6):745-6. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17275904
Total upper lip necrosis and loxoscelism caused by violin spider bite.
Abstract: Arthropods and in particular spiders are a common embodiment of our fears, despite the fact that only a few species are dangerous to man. The authors present a case involving severe local and general reactions to a loxosceles (brown recluse spider) bite....
An evaluation of general and spinal anesthesia techniques for prostate brachytherapy in a day surgery setting.
Abstract: We evaluated four anesthetic techniques for transperineal brachytherapy of the prostate in a day-surgery setting: general anesthesia with either fentanyl and propofol total IV anesthesia (TIVA) or with fentanyl, thiopental, and isoflurane (F-P-I), versus...
Persistent cauda equina syndrome with no identifiable facilitating condition after an uneventful single spinal administration of 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine.
Abstract: We diagnosed cauda equina syndrome 15 h after uneventful single spinal administration of 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine 12.5 mg through a 27-gauge pencil-point type needle. No preexisting neurologic disorder was recorded. There was no pain or paresthesia during...
Stem cell mobilization by hyperbaric oxygen
“We hypothesized that exposure to hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) would mobilize stem/progenitor cells from the bone marrow by a nitric oxide (NO) -dependent mechanism”
The goal of this investigation was to determine whether exposure to hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) would mobilize bone marrow-derived stem/progenitor cells (SPCs) in humans and animals.
Stem cell release in humans exposed to HBO2. This protocol was approved by the Institutional Review Board and by the Clinical Trials Scientific Monitoring Committee of the Abramson Cancer Center. Patients are referred to the University of Pennsylvania Institute for Environmental Medicine for prophylactic HBO2 treatment because of a risk for ORN.
Hyperbaric oxygen stimulates cell proliferation and normalizes multidrug resistance protein-2 protein localization in primary rat hepatocytes.
Abstract: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) has been used for many clinical treatments, including primary liver non-function. However, the cellular mechanism by which HBO treatment ameliorates liver function is not understood. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to...
