Abstract: A 78-year-old woman presented with acute decreased vision in both eyes. She had been treated for a pituitary mass with a total of 4,500 centigray of external beam radiation 8 months prior to presentation. She was diagnosed with radiation optic neuropathy....

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) Research for Cancer.
Age-dependent response of murine female bone marrow cells to hyperbaric oxygen.
Abstract: Consequences of age on the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) on bone marrow (BM) derived stem cells and progenitors (SCPs) are largely unknown. We treated 2- and 18-month old C57BL/6 female mice by HBO. Hematopoietic stem cells and progenitors, enumerated...
Successful hyperbaric oxygen therapy for laryngeal radionecrosis after chemoradiotherapy for mesopharyngeal cancer: case report and literature review.
Abstract: Laryngeal radionecrosis is one of the most troublesome late complications of radiotherapy, because it is frequently resistant to treatment and laryngectomy is required in the worst case. Here, we report a case of laryngeal radionecrosis, successfully treated...
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for late radiation tissue injury in gynecologic malignancies.
Late radiation tissue injury is a serious complication of radiotherapy for patients with gynecologic malignancies. Strategies for managing pain and other clinical features have limited efficacy; however, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO(2)) may be an effective option for some patients. In a systematic review of the literature, the Ovid medline, embase, Cochrane Library, National Guidelines Clearinghouse, and Canadian Medical Association Infobase databases were searched to June 2009 for clinical practice guidelines, systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, or other relevant evidence. Studies that did not evaluate soft tissue necrosis, cystitis, proctitis, bone necrosis, and other complications were excluded.
Acute pain management in opioid-tolerant patients: a growing challenge.
Abstract: In Australia and New Zealand, in parallel with other developed countries, the number of patients prescribed opioids on a long-term basis has grown rapidly over the last decade. The burden of chronic pain is more widely recognised and there has been an...
Conjunctival findings in hyperbaric and low-tension glaucoma: an in vivo confocal microscopy study.
Abstract: To analyse the epithelial features of the bulbar conjunctiva in hyperbaric and low-tension glaucoma (LTG) using in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM). Thirty-six eyes of 36 patients [18 affected by primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and 18 with LTG] were...
Laser interstitial thermal therapy for focal cerebral radiation necrosis: a case report and literature review.
Abstract: Whole-brain radiotherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) play a central role in the treatment of metastatic brain tumors. Radiation necrosis occurs in 5% of patients and can be very difficult to treat. The available treatment options for radiation...
Comparison of intravesical hyaluronic acid instillation and hyperbaric oxygen in the treatment of radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis.
Abstract: • To compare the efficacy of intravesical hyaluronic acid (HA) instillation and hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) in the treatment of radiation-induced haemorrhagic cystitis (HC). • In total 36 patients who underwent radiotherapy for their pelvic malignancies and...
A cost-analysis case study of radiation cystitis treatment including hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Abstract: To undertake an economic analysis of the direct costs of treating radiation cystitis from a purchaser perspective, comparing conservative, non-operative and surgical interventions with hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT). A male in his 60s with prostatic...
