Recent Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) News
[Obesity, diabetes mellitus, and gas gangrene: a major therapeutic challenge].
Abstract: Soft tissue infections are uncommon but prognosis is severe (20 to 50%). Management consists in surgical debridement, antibiotic therapy against anaerobic and aerobic bacteria, and appropriate intensive care. When available, hyperbaric...
Modifying normal tissue damage postirradiation. Report of a workshop sponsored by the Radiation Research Program, National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Maryland, September 6-8, 2000.
Abstract: Late effects that develop in normal tissues adjacent to the tumor site in the months to years after radiotherapy can reduce the quality of life of cancer survivors. They can be dose-limiting and debilitating or life-threatening. There is...
Hyperbaric oxygen improves healing in experimental rat colitis.
This study was designed to investigate therapeutic effects of hyperbaric oxygen on experimentally induced colitis in rats by assessing oxidative tissue damage, neutrophil accumulation and histological changes.
Six groups of animals were used. No procedures were done in the sham group. In the vehicle group, 50% ethanol-induced colitis, and in four other groups, 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulphonic acid-induced colonic inflammation was achieved. In acute and chronic colitis non-treatment groups, no other procedure was done. In acute and chronic colitis hyperbaric oxygen treatment groups, rats underwent hyperbaric oxygen treatment for two or fourteen days.
Hyperbaric oxygenation mitigates focal cerebral injury and reduces striatal dopamine release in a rat model of transient middle cerebral artery occlusion.
Abstract: The usefulness of the administration of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) in the treatment of acute focal cerebral ischemia remains debatable. A significant association exists between focal cerebral injury and an excessive release of extracellular...
Hyperbaric oxygen and surgery.
Abstract: Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy, that is the administration of 100% oxygen delivered under pressure, has a beneficial effect in several surgical conditions. Its use has been assessed and audited and its pharmacological effects...
Early hyperbaric oxygen therapy for retinal artery occlusion.
Abstract: To assess whether early hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) treatment has a beneficial effect on visual results after retinal artery occlusion (RAO). A comparative retrospective study in which medical records of all HBO-treated RAO patients in...
[Hemodynamic and respiratory changes in athletes during deep breath-hold diving].
Abstract: The study analysed the hemodynamic and respiratory aspects of deep breath-hold diving. One male (59-year-old) and one female (32-year-old) subject were enrolled. They were both champion deep breath-hold divers. The dives were performed in...
Down regulation of COX-2 is involved in hyperbaric oxygen treatment in a rat transient focal cerebral ischemia model.
Abstract: The effect of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) on cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression after transient focal ischemia was evaluated. A rat middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO) model was produced using the intraluminal filament...
